Preliminary round selection occurs by recorded audition. The preliminary round is adjudicated by ROS Artistic Director, Eric Townell, and/or his delegate. Repertoire can be your choice from oratorio, opera, art song or musical theater genres. Preliminary-round repertoire need not be the same as semi-final round repertoire.
Applications are due no later than March 1, 2017, paid, complete, and correct. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Results of the preliminary round will be decided by March 6, 2017. E-mail notification of status in the competition will be sent to each applicant shortly thereafter.
Semi-Final Round (April 7, 2017)
Twenty semi-finalists will compete before a panel of judges on Friday, April 7, 2017, between the hours of 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Semi-finalists will have about 10 minutes to sing. Each performer will be asked to offer one selection and may be asked to offer an alternative selection, preferably of a contrasting style.
Music Requirements for the Semi-Final Round
Each semi-finalist must submit two printed copies of the music they will be singing for the semifinals to the ROS office no later than April 1, 2017. Please clearly mark the scores with the title, composer, your name, and all cuts and other performance indications.
Following completion of the semi-final round, all contestants will be contacted by phone. Approximately ten performers will advance to the final round.
Finalists will be advised of:
- their final round repertoire, selected by the judges from semi-final repertoire choices
- the time and location of the rehearsal for the final round with the accompanist
- the call time and location for the final round performance the following evening
Finalists will have the opportunity to rehearse with the accompanist on Saturday morning, April 8, 2017.
Final Round (April 8, 2017)
The final competition will be held on the evening of April 8, 2017, before a live audience and a panel of judges.
Final Round Competition
Performers are asked to give a brief spoken introduction of your piece to the audience. After your performance, the panel is invited and encouraged to offer constructive and professional commentary. The judges typically offer direct, tactful, and constructive observations on the nature of the performance and the artist’s strengths and weaknesses. As participants have noted every year, this has been an extremely valuable aspect of Classical Idol for the contestants.
The judges will award cash prizes to the top four singers. Additionally, the audience will choose a favorite performer for a separate cash prize.
