Hector Berlioz’s “Grande Mess des Morts (Requiem),” Op. 5, for large chorus, large orchestra, antiphonal brass ensembles and tenor soloist, is among the greatest artistic achievements in the art form. Berlioz scored the chorus for STB, without altos. Many commonly available editions kept that arrangement, making performances by modern symphonic choirs impractical and frustrating for conductors and choristers alike. Adrian Horn’s thoughtful, expert edition creates a beautifully singable alto line while faithfully rendering Berlioz’s intent for color, texture, and volume of sound. Choruses across the U.S. have found this edition to be the essential key to a successful performance.

In 1954, the Rochester Oratorio Society, under its founding conductor, THEODORE HOLLENBACH, recorded Hector Berlioz’s monumental choral/orchestral masterwork, REQUIEM, Op. 5 (Grande Messe des Morts), featuring tenor soloist Ray De Voll. This historic recording has been professionally digitally re-mastered in pristine high fidelity with historical cover artwork included in the two-CD set.
