Q&A with Emerging Artist Competition “Joseph Eduardo” Judge, Jonathan Beyer
Q. From your perspective as a past judge, a professional singer, Director of Chautauqua Opera Conservatory, and the 2010 First Prize Winner of the ROS’ Rochester International Vocal Competition, why is the Emerging Artist Competition “Joseph Eduardo” so important?
A. What’s so important about this competition is that it gives young singers a platform to perform their art. In the conservatory, there is a lot of talking about music, but “doing” (engaging with an audience) is invaluable. It’s a great way to meet and network. There are great benefits to meeting a group of people who can help you in your career, with opportunities to present to or make introductions. It’s so much more than just prize money and the accolades of winning.
Q. What are your words of advice for applicants?
A. This is a really great performance opportunity. Know that the judges are rooting for everyone! Get your repertoire correct, and sing it “correctly.” Connect with the audience and demonstrate your joy of singing. It’s not about impressing but about expressing. Every singer should get out there and sing as much as possible, so don’t miss the April 12 application deadline. https://www.yaptracker.com/applications/rochester-oratorio-society-joseph-eduardo-2026
Q. What do you look for in judging this competition?
A. Vocal competitions are always difficult to judge. Judging people “in process” and with different voice types is somewhat like comparing apples and oranges. Who actually transcends the moment?
Q. What kind of experience should audience members expect at the May 16 finals?
A. It’s a great evening for the audience! Three very different singers offer a variety of repertoire and voice types, so you get a real musical variety in short bursts. It’s actually a very effective way to find out about your own musical tastes from a “sampler platter” concert!
