Updates from our Laureates

2015 winner Laura Strickling and pianist Tom Sauer perform James Matheson’s landmark song cycle Times Alone on a recording from Yarlung Records that also features the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen, and the Color Field Quartet.

Strickling’s shapely, nuanced voicings and emotional urgency in the first three songs has a striking directness. Thomas Sauer achieves some luminous sonorities in the final pair, blending admirably with Strickling’s deeply personal utterances.

2011 winner Kathryn Lewek recently performed Mozart’s Requiem with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra to glowing reviews. Her 2016 engagements included the role of Queen of the Night at Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Metropolitan Opera and  return to Deutsche Oper Berlin as Konstanze in Mozart’s “Abduction from the Seraglio.”
