Sarah Joyce Cooper Returns to Rochester for a Special Residency

Sarah Stage

The Rochester Oratorio Society is thrilled to welcome acclaimed soprano Sarah Joyce Cooper back to Rochester this October as part of our 80th anniversary season. In addition to performing as the featured soloist in Mass in Blue on October 17, Cooper will also present a recital and masterclass during her residency, making this visit a unique opportunity for our community.

A Rich and Varied Program

On Wednesday, October 15 at 7:00 PM, Cooper will take the stage at Roberts Wesleyan University’s Shewan Recital Hall for a recital that spans Italian arias, Cuban and French art songs, and Spirituals. The performance promises a vibrant evening of musical variety, showcasing Cooper’s wide-ranging artistry and deep expressive power.

The following day, Thursday, October 16 at 1:40 PM, she will lead a masterclass with selected Roberts Wesleyan University voice students, hosted by Professor Constance Fee and the RWU Voice Department. This educational event offers aspiring singers invaluable coaching and insight from a distinguished artist.

Both events are free and open to the public, presented in collaboration with Roberts Wesleyan University and the Opera Guild of Rochester.

A Rare Collaboration with Lasting Impact

While guest artists often come to Rochester for a single performance, it is far less common to see a coordinated effort among multiple organizations to maximize the reach of a residency. By working together, the Rochester Oratorio Society, Roberts Wesleyan University, and the Opera Guild of Rochester are expanding the impact of Cooper’s visit, connecting her not only with audiences but also with students, educators, and the broader arts community.

“This is not just a performance, it’s a partnership,” said Eric Townell, Artistic Director of the Rochester Oratorio Society. “When organizations join forces like this, we create opportunities for audiences and students that wouldn’t be possible otherwise. Sarah’s time in Rochester will leave a lasting impression far beyond the concert stage.”
