Hector Berlioz’s “Grande Messe des Morts (Requiem),” Op. 5, for large chorus, large orchestra, antiphonal brass ensembles and tenor soloist, is among the greatest artistic achievements in the art form. Berlioz scored the chorus for STB, without altos. Many commonly available editions kept that arrangement, making performances by modern symphonic choirs impractical and frustrating for conductors and choristers alike.
